Despite "founding" NoVA BUG last year we haven't had much activity. I hope to change that in 2008, with your help!
I am already looking at three nights per month for meetings (2nd Thu is OWASP, 3rd Thu is ISSA, 4th Thu is NoVA Sec). Weekends are out for me given family constraints.
What do you think about a lunch hour meeting on one of the Fridays of each month? It's possible that those of us who are lucky enough to carve out a little more time beyond the traditional lunch hour could stay to do technical stuff as well.
If I hear this will work, I will start selecting Fridays and also look for generous corporate souls to donate meeting space. I thinking bringing lunch to the space will work better than trying to meet at a restaurant and conduct a talk.
If you have other ideas please let me know. Thank you.

Congratulations WXS
Our very own Wesley Shields was given the FreeBSD commit bit today, according to Erwin Lansing. Congratulations WXS!

Any NoVA BUG members attending Black Hat
Are any NoVA BUG members (or potential members) going to Black Hat next week? I'll be teaching 28-31 July and then attending the briefings 1-2 Aug. Maybe we could hold an evening NoVA BUG meeting there?
Otherwise, I'd like to try for an August meeting. Do we have any volunteers for speakers? It kills me to have missed WXS' talk on ports -- maybe he can repeat later this year, or at ShmooCon.
Maybe we should also try for a FreeBSD installfest when 6.3 and 7.0 are released, probably in September?

NoVA BUG Joins MetaBUG
We're part of the MetaBUG started by Mike Erdely and Jason Dixon. BUGs of the world unite to form Voltron, I guess -- the lion version, not the other one.
I joined the talk mailing list, so you might like to as well.
I'm still open for suggestions for a good place to hold our first lunchtime meeting. If we can squeeze a March meeting in, that's great. Otherwise let's shoot for April.

NoVA BUG Mailing List Created
Thanks (again) to Wesley Shields for establishing the NoVA BUG Mailing List. This will help us have extended discussions that can't be handled well by NoVA BUG blog comments. Only registered mailing list members can post (to frustrate spammers), so sign up today.

NoVA BUG Meeting Concepts
Since I'm already committed to one meeting per month after work for NoVA Sec, how do prospective NoVA BUG members feel about lunchtime meetings? Maybe we could find a place that would give us a semi-private room, and I could bring a projector and screen. We could have a working lunch instead of meeting after work? Thank you.

NoVA BUG Founded
Welcome to the Web site of the northern Virginia BSD users group (NoVA BUG). Two years ago I expressed interest in helping with this organization, but someone else registered novabug.org and did nothing with the name or concept. Following in the modest success of NoVA Sec, I thought it was time to create a BSD users group for the technical professionals in this area. I'll be looking for an organization to host our first meeting, probably in March. If you are interested in participating in these low-key yet high-value gatherings of like-minded BSD users, please leave a comment. I think we'll be able to recruit someone to host a mailing list fairly soon. Thank you!
